Sustainable Development Initiative

Philosophy

The National Society of Professional Engineers Code of Ethics includes this sentence in the Professional Obligations section, “Engineers are encouraged to adhere to the principles of sustainable development in order to protect the environment for future generations.”  In a footnote, it goes on to define sustainable development as   “…..the challenge of meeting human needs for natural resources, industrial products, energy, food, transportation, shelter, and effective waste management while conserving and protecting environmental quality and the natural resource base essential for future development.”

The American Society of Civil Engineers Code of Ethics provides Guidelines to Practice.  Canon 1 states that, “Engineers shall hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public and shall strive to comply with the principles of sustainable development in the performance of their professional duties.”   Further text in this Canon states that, “Engineers should seek opportunities to be of constructive service in civic affairs and work for the advancement of the safety, health, and well-being of their communities, and the protection of the environment through the practice of sustainable development.  Engineers should be committed to improving the environment by adherence to the principles of sustainable development so as to enhance the quality of life of the general public.”

So it is in this spirit we realize that the earth is one resource we cannot replace and Triangle Building & Housing Corp. is committed to bringing sustainable initiatives and technologies to Triangle Fraternity housing through a number of conduits.

Programs

Consulting – The Building & Housing Corp. board is made up of brothers from a diverse background of professions with a vast depth of experience in housing and housing related issues, specifically as they relate to Sustainable Development Initiative renovations.  This incredible resource is available for Triangle Chapters and House Corporations to access by requesting a consult from the TBHC board.

Loans – The TBHC has a diverse portfolio of loan products to assist chapters and house corporations meet their housing, life safety, and specifically Sustainable Development Initiative projects.  Improve efficiency, lower utility bills, and shrink your carbon footprint.

Loan Guarantees – Have a Sustainable Development Initiative project that is larger in scope, replacing an HVAC system, whole house insulation, or new windows…maybe a loan guarantee is the appropriate way the TBHC can assist.  Loan guarantees are when the TBHC guarantees a traditional loan/mortgage/line of credit with a commercial bank who is the primary holder of your note.

Property Improvement Contest – Annually TBHC will evaluate the completed projects and award the 3 best projects. Winners will be announced at the next National Convention or Herb Scobie Leadership School. Prize money amounts will vary depending on the balance of the unused yearly grant budget. Chapters are encouraged to use the prize money for additional property/community improvement projects.
